The Firefighter/EMT or Firefighter/Paramedic position is a non-exempt position under FLSA and is responsible for protecting lives and property of the public by performing fire suppression, technical rescues, hazardous materials responses and providing emergency medical care. This employee should be in excellent physical condition and have the ability to remain poised under extremely difficult and hazardous circumstances. This employee should possess a strong mechanical aptitude and effective communication and public relations skills. The employee must have Kansas Certification EMT or higher before employment and a Firefighter 1 Certification is preferred.
Essential Functions: The employee performs all duties required and expected of firefighters and EMT personnel in the course of protecting life and property. Drives EMS and Fire apparatus, operates pumps and other equipment, lays down hose and performs fire containment and extinguishments, raises, lowers and climbs ladders, conducts salvage and overhaul operations. Performs dispatching duties for the Fire/EMS department, police department and city gas, water and electric crews as well as 911 calls. Prepares ambulance billing. Operates, maintains, cleans and performs safety checks on department facilities, trucks and other equipment. Performs required tests on equipment as required and on an “as needed” basis. The employee assists with minor repairs on department equipment and vehicles. Aids in the filing and completing of required fire reports, training and various rescue classes, etc. Treats and transports the sick and injured patients to medical facilities. Maintains a working knowledge of county and city streets and hydrant locations as well as reads maps accurately.
Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent. Must possess a Kansas Class C driver’s license, Kansas CPR Certification and EMT or higher certification.
Desirable Qualifications: Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2, Kansas certified A-EMT, Kansas Paramedic License. Must be able to obtain a Kansas class B driver's license within one year of employment.
*Applicants will be expected to pass a pre-employment drug test, physical examination and background check. Additional physical examination, skills assessment and/or agility testing may be required for particular position.
